Scientists examining 17 human artery samples found microplastics in every one, adding to the growing list of places where plastic particles have been detected inside the body. The finding suggests that these tiny fragments are not only entering people through daily exposure, but may also be reaching parts of the circulatory system.
Microplastics are generally defined as plastic pieces smaller than 5 millimeters. Researchers have already reported them in several areas of the body, including bones and the brain. With this latest result, concern is shifting away from whether microplastics can get inside humans and toward how widespread that exposure may be.
The study’s artery findings do not by themselves answer how dangerous the particles are, but they strengthen concerns about possible long-term effects. If microplastics are consistently showing up in human tissues, scientists will need to better understand how they move through the body, how long they remain there, and whether they contribute to disease.
While the sample size in this report was limited to 17 artery samples, the fact that all of them contained microplastics makes the result difficult to ignore. The research adds to a fast-growing body of evidence that plastic pollution is no longer just an environmental issue, but also a human health question.
