India is currently facing nine pending trade disputes under World Trade Organization rules, the government told Parliament on Tuesday. The cases have been brought by several trading partners, including Japan, China, the European Union, Brazil and Australia.
The disputes span a range of sectors and policy areas. According to the information shared in Parliament, the matters involve steel, sugar, information and communication technology tariffs, and production-linked incentive, or PLI, schemes.
The update highlights the breadth of scrutiny India is facing at the WTO as countries challenge different parts of its trade and industrial policy framework. These cases remain pending, meaning the disputes are still moving through the WTO process rather than being fully resolved.
The government also said India has spent about Rs 2.43 crore on legal expenses linked to these matters. The disclosure offers a snapshot of both the number of active WTO disputes against India and the costs involved in defending them.
