Researchers have developed a bioengineered chewing gum that could become a new way to target microbes linked to head and neck cancer. According to the report, the gum reduced HPV levels by as much as 93% in testing and also sharply lowered two bacteria associated with these cancers.

The study used oral samples from patients, and extracts from the specially designed gum were tested against harmful microbes in the mouth. The results suggest the approach may do more than reduce oral HPV, which is a known risk factor in some head and neck cancers. It also appeared to nearly eliminate two cancer-linked bacterial strains.

One of the more notable findings is that the treatment did not wipe out the entire oral microbiome. Instead, it preserved beneficial mouth bacteria, an important point because broad antimicrobial treatments can sometimes disrupt healthy microbes along with harmful ones.

That balance is why the chewing gum is drawing attention as a potentially safer and more affordable therapy. While more research will be needed to confirm how well it works in real-world use, the early findings point to a simple delivery method that may help reduce dangerous oral microbes without causing wider damage to the mouth’s natural bacterial environment.
