India’s production and imports of NP/NPK fertilisers weakened sharply in the June quarter as higher raw material costs disrupted the sector. The pressure has been linked to the conflict in West Asia, which pushed up prices of key inputs used to make complex fertilisers.
The reported decline was especially steep in domestic output of complex fertilisers, which fell 28%. Imports also dropped significantly during the same period, pointing to a broader supply squeeze rather than a shift limited to local manufacturing.
The slowdown matters because NP/NPK fertilisers are important for balanced nutrient application in farming. A sustained fall in production and overseas purchases can raise concerns about availability, particularly if elevated input costs continue to affect buying decisions and factory operations.
The latest trend highlights how geopolitical tensions outside India can quickly influence agricultural supply chains at home. With raw material prices under pressure, the fertiliser market is facing a challenging quarter marked by tighter supply and uncertainty over nutrient availability.
