Nearly 75,000 hand-built kites are set to transform the Roberts Family Gallery at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art into an expansive installation of color, pattern and movement. The project presents the open-air language of kite making within a museum setting.
Titled Giant Arc, the exhibition is by artist Jacob Hashimoto and is scheduled to open on August 22, 2026. Its large-scale arrangement brings together bamboo and elements associated with Japanese kite traditions, linking craft, drawing and installation art.
The work reflects how artists and kite makers use the sky as a changing exhibition space. Suspended from the wind outdoors or gathered inside a gallery, the kites turn illustrated surfaces into an environment that shifts with motion and light.
At SFMOMA, Giant Arc will give that airborne form a concentrated architectural setting, presenting kites not simply as objects for flight but as building blocks for an immersive work of art and design.
