Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus described by health officials as an urgent threat, has been reported in New Jersey as it spreads across nearly two dozen US states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 3,000 cases have been recorded so far this year.
The fungus has now been reported in 23 states, raising concern about its ability to move through healthcare settings and affect vulnerable people. Its resistance to medicines makes infections especially difficult to manage.
Candida auris can also be hard to identify because its symptoms are highly generic. That means infections may remain unnoticed without appropriate testing, allowing the superbug to hide in plain sight.
