Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has removed 2,499 metric tonnes of solid waste from the city’s beaches during a special cleanliness drive held from July 9 to July 19. The operation was carried out as part of preparations ahead of high tides.
According to the available details, the large-scale clean-up focused on clearing accumulated waste from key beach stretches across the city. The material collected included plastic waste, mixed debris and plant matter that had gathered along the shoreline.
The effort highlights the scale of waste management challenges faced by Mumbai’s coastal areas, especially during the monsoon period when tides and rain can push more rubbish onto beaches. Removing waste before high tides can help reduce further spread of litter and keep public spaces cleaner.
