Satellite imagery appears to independently confirm that a Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber was destroyed at Engels-2 air base in a Ukrainian drone strike. According to the available report details, the attack was carried out by Ukraine's SBU and reached a target roughly 800km away, underlining the growing reach of long-range drone operations in the war.
The images are said to show that one of the bombers was effectively torn apart, despite Russian efforts to protect key aircraft. The report says decoy Tu-95s had been painted on the tarmac and 17 shelters were built for real planes, but those measures did not prevent the loss of an actual strategic bomber.
That matters because the Tu-95 is not an easily replaceable aircraft. Its importance to Russia's long-range strike capability gives the reported destruction added weight, especially if confirmed losses begin to reduce the number of operational bombers available for future missions.
