Chennai Metrowater has seized 30 illegal submersible pumps in Taramani as part of a crackdown on water theft in the area. The action points to a stronger push against unauthorised extraction from the city’s water network.

The seized pumps were reportedly being used in violation of the rules, prompting enforcement by the civic utility. Such illegal use can interfere with planned supply and place additional strain on public water distribution systems.

Authorities have indicated that violators may face fines of up to ₹10,000. Water connections can also be disconnected as part of the penalty for unauthorised pumping and theft.

The Taramani seizure reflects a firmer stand by Metrowater against misuse of public water resources in Chennai. It also signals closer monitoring of illegal pump installations in areas where supply is vulnerable to unauthorised tapping.
