India's CJP protest, widely known by its "cockroach" nickname, has been called off after the country's education minister stepped down. The demonstration had become the clearest sign of public frustration with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in recent years.
The decision to end the protest follows days of tension and unrest. According to police, about 300 people were taken to hospital after violence linked to the demonstrations, with officers saying that at least half of those injured were security personnel.
Authorities also said around 70 protesters were arrested during the clashes. Most of those detained have since been released on bail, suggesting the immediate confrontation has eased even as the political fallout continues.
The minister's resignation appears to have reduced pressure on the government for now, but the scale of the protest underlined the depth of anger that had built around the issue. Even with the campaign suspended, the unrest has left a significant political mark on Modi's administration.
