Researchers say CRISPR may help solve one of the biggest problems in prostate cancer treatment: the disease often does not respond well to immunotherapy. In the new work, scientists used the gene-editing tool to make prostate cancer cells easier for the immune system to recognize and attack.

The study suggests that changing the tumor cells with CRISPR improved how well immunotherapy worked. In mouse experiments, the combined approach produced much stronger results than immunotherapy on its own, pointing to a possible way to make resistant tumors more vulnerable.

That is significant because immunotherapy has transformed treatment for some cancers, but prostate cancer has remained notoriously difficult to treat with it. If researchers can make these cancer cells more visible to immune defenses, it could open a new path for patients with tumors that have been harder to target.

The treatment remains experimental, and the reported benefits were seen in mice rather than people. Even so, the findings raise hope that CRISPR-guided strategies could eventually improve immunotherapy not only for prostate cancer, but also for other hard-to-treat tumors.
