India recorded 5,022 child adoptions between April 2025 and March 2026, marking its highest annual total in a decade. The latest figures point to a notable rise in adoption activity across the country during the period.
Most of these adoptions were domestic. According to the reported data, 4,603 children were adopted within India, while 419 were adopted through inter-country placements. The numbers show that Indian families continued to account for the overwhelming share of adoptions.
The data also highlights growth in the adoption of children with special needs. That category rose by 25 percent over the year, reaching 392 adoptions. The increase suggests broader acceptance of children who may have previously faced greater challenges in finding permanent homes.
Overall, the annual total stands out as a significant milestone for India’s adoption system. With domestic adoptions driving the increase and special needs placements also moving higher, the latest year reflects stronger momentum than seen in recent years.
