Credit card issuance in India climbed to its fastest pace in more than two years in June 2026, according to Reserve Bank of India data. Banks added a net 1.14 million credit cards during the month, signaling a sharp pickup in new card acquisition across the sector.

The latest additions were again led by the country’s biggest issuers. HDFC Bank topped the monthly list with 163,000 net new credit cards, narrowly moving ahead of SBI Cards, which added 162,000. ICICI Bank also posted strong growth, adding 151,000 cards during the same period.

The June numbers suggest that large lenders continue to dominate India’s credit card market, with private sector banks and established card issuers accounting for a major share of new issuance. Federal Bank also maintained its recent strong momentum, reinforcing the broader rise in card additions.

The RBI figures point to renewed strength in consumer credit demand and card distribution after a slower period. With issuance now at its strongest level in over two years, the June data highlights a notable rebound in activity among India’s leading card providers.
