A survey asking whether people would choose a guaranteed £50,000 or the chance to win £1m found that most would take the certainty. The preference for the fixed amount was especially strong among women, according to the findings described in the report.

The result suggests many people see £50,000 as significant enough to outweigh the appeal of a far larger but uncertain payout. For a lot of households, that level of money would be considered transformative on its own, making the safer option easier to justify.

The comparison is also striking because £50,000 is said to be £10,000 higher than median earnings for a full-time worker. Framed that way, the guaranteed sum can look less like a compromise and more like a practical financial win.

The survey highlights a familiar pattern in personal finance: many people value security over risk, even when the possible reward is much higher. Faced with a choice between certainty and a slim chance of becoming much richer, most appear to favour the money they can count on.
