Angola raised about $321 million by selling a 15% stake in Unitel, the country’s dominant mobile operator, in what was described as the biggest initial public offering ever held in the country. The sale marks a major capital markets event for Angola and puts one of its best-known telecom assets into a wider public offering.
The stake sold by the state traces back to shares seized from Isabel dos Santos, the businesswoman once known as Africa’s richest woman. That background gives the Unitel deal added significance, turning a recovered asset into a source of public funding through the stock market.
According to the report, the proceeds are set to help finance Angola’s state budget. That means the Unitel IPO was not only a landmark telecom listing, but also a practical fiscal move for the government as it seeks new funding sources.
Because Unitel is Angola’s leading mobile operator, the transaction stands out for both its size and its symbolism. The sale shows how Angola is using public markets to monetize high-value assets while testing investor demand for large domestic listings.
