Brookfield Asset Management is steering new renewable energy investment in India toward states with stronger transmission infrastructure, especially in the south. The company sees those markets as better placed to absorb additional wind and solar capacity with fewer disruptions.
The shift highlights a key issue for India’s clean energy build-out: grid readiness. While demand for renewable power remains strong, bottlenecks in some western and northern states are limiting how much electricity can be moved and used, leading to higher curtailment for generators.
By prioritizing grid-ready Indian states, Brookfield is aiming to reduce the operational risks that can come with transmission constraints. Lower curtailment and more reliable network access can improve project performance and make new green investment easier to scale.
Brookfield also indicated that current grid bottlenecks are a temporary challenge rather than a permanent barrier. Even so, its strategy suggests that near-term renewable energy growth in India may favor regions where transmission networks are already stronger and better equipped for expanding wind and solar generation.
