India is planning to source as much as a quarter of its liquefied petroleum gas imports from the United States in 2027, according to sources. The move would mark a notable change in the country’s fuel procurement strategy as it looks to reduce dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers.
The shift matters because India has relied heavily on the Middle East for LPG. In 2025, about 90% of the country’s total LPG imports of 21.85 million metric tons came from that region, highlighting how concentrated its supply base has been.
Buying more US LPG would give India greater geographic diversity in imports and could also support broader efforts to strengthen trade ties with Washington. A larger share of American cargoes would help spread supply risk across more sources rather than leaving India exposed to one dominant region.
The reported plan points to a longer-term balancing approach rather than an immediate replacement of existing suppliers. If implemented, it would reshape part of India’s energy import mix while underscoring the growing role of the United States in global LPG trade.
