India saw solar power curtailment of 8,133 GWh during April to June this year, according to the government. The main reason was grid limitation, with the power system unable to absorb surplus solar generation during daytime hours.
The update highlights a key challenge in India’s clean energy transition. As solar capacity rises, midday generation can exceed the ability of the grid to transmit, store or use all available electricity, leading to some output being cut back.
At the same time, the government said rooftop solar adoption continues to expand under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. The programme has received large numbers of applications and installations, showing strong household interest in solar power.
The government also indicated that more than 4.8 million households have benefited from rooftop solar installations. It said central financial assistance has supported the rollout, even as wider grid upgrades remain important to make full use of growing solar generation.
