Researchers at UCLA Health say a new mouse study could help guide future autism treatment research after a single dose of rapamycin appeared to reverse autism-like symptoms in the animals. The findings are being described as promising, but early, and the work was done in mice rather than people.

According to the report, the study linked changes in the brain and behavior to the autism-like symptoms seen in the mice. After treatment with rapamycin, those symptoms improved, suggesting that the drug affected biological pathways involved in those behaviors.

Even so, the benefits did not last. The report notes that the effects of rapamycin were temporary, an important limitation that underscores how far the research still has to go before any possible clinical use could be considered.

Scientists say the value of the study may be in showing where to look next. By identifying mechanisms tied to autism-like symptoms in mice, the research could support the development of safer, more targeted therapies in the future, though much more testing will be needed.
