Nuclear power is moving back to the center of energy policy as governments and industry look for more energy security, dependable low-carbon electricity, and enough generation to support electrification and expanding digital infrastructure. In that debate, small modular reactors, or SMRs, are being presented as a key part of the sector’s next phase.
The core argument is that the nuclear revival will not be determined by reactor designs alone. It will depend on whether the industry can build integrated supply chains that support large-scale deployment in the 2030s. That means lining up manufacturing capacity, specialized components, project delivery, and the broader industrial systems needed to move from plans to operating assets.
