Assam is aiming to produce 60 lakh eggs a day as the state pushes for self-reliance in meeting local demand, according to a minister. The target signals a major scale-up for the poultry sector and reflects a broader effort to strengthen domestic food production.
At present, Assam’s egg output is about 26 lakh per day, well below the level the state says it needs to fully meet demand. Raising production to 60 lakh daily would more than double current output and reduce dependence on supplies from outside the state.
The push on eggs is part of a wider agriculture and allied-sector strategy. The budget also includes measures to support higher fish and dairy production, suggesting that the government is looking at livestock and protein supply in an integrated way.
If achieved, the expanded egg production target could help improve availability, support farmers and allied businesses, and move Assam closer to self-sufficiency in key food segments. The plan highlights the state’s focus on boosting local output through targeted investment.
