Several of Mumbai’s best-known social and sports clubs have had their food licences suspended after food safety inspections flagged serious hygiene lapses. The action affects major names including the Cricket Club of India, MIG Cricket Club, Willingdon Sports Club and Juhu Gymkhana.
According to the reported findings, inspectors found signs of pest infestation, including cockroaches and flies, in food preparation areas. The checks also reportedly uncovered mouldy food items and broader concerns about cleanliness inside club kitchens.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration took action after identifying failures in basic food handling standards. The issues highlighted in the inspections included poor hygiene practices and inadequate food storage protocols, both of which can raise safety risks for members and guests.
The case has put a spotlight on food safety compliance at prominent private clubs in Mumbai. With licences suspended at these establishments, the inspections appear to signal stricter scrutiny of kitchen conditions and adherence to mandatory hygiene norms.
