Asia’s thermal coal imports climbed for a third straight month in July, with major buyers increasing purchases to cover higher electricity use during the summer peak. China, Japan and South Korea were among the countries that bought more fuel as hot weather supported stronger power demand.
The July increase points to continued reliance on imported coal across key Asian markets when air-conditioning use and power consumption rise. Even as energy systems diversify, thermal coal remains an important backup for utilities that need reliable supply during periods of heavy demand.
India, however, stood out from the broader regional trend. While other major Asian importers lifted buying, India did not follow the same rebound, making it the main exception in the latest monthly pattern.
Taken together, the data suggests Asia’s coal trade is still being driven by seasonal electricity needs and the purchasing behavior of its biggest importing economies. For July, that meant firmer demand across much of the region, but a different direction in India.
