Health officials in Seattle say a bat found on a sidewalk near the University of Washington has tested positive for rabies. The case has prompted a public warning from Public Health – Seattle & King County because rabies can spread through contact with an infected animal.
Authorities said anyone who may have touched the bat or otherwise come into contact with it should reach out to the health department. Quick medical guidance is important after possible exposure, since rabies is a serious disease once symptoms begin.
Officials also warned that pets may be at risk if they had any interaction with the bat. Pet owners are being advised to have animals checked by a veterinarian if there is any chance of contact.
