West Nile virus was detected in a mosquito at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, according to a notice shared by Joint Base Langley-Eustis. The finding was reported Tuesday by the base’s pest management team.
Following the detection, the base said mosquito control steps were being taken, including ground fogging operations. The response is aimed at reducing mosquito activity in the area after the virus was identified.
West Nile virus is commonly monitored during mosquito season because it can spread through mosquito bites. Public agencies and large facilities often increase surveillance and treatment efforts when a positive sample is found.
The update was posted through Joint Base Langley-Eustis channels, alerting people on and around the installation to the discovery and the follow-up pest control action. Additional local guidance would typically come from base officials as monitoring continues.
