Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone is reportedly evaluating the purchase of a controlling stake in Associated British Ports, the UK port operator known as ABP. The potential transaction is said to be worth close to $10 billion, which would place it among the largest overseas acquisitions ever attempted by an Indian company.
If the deal moves forward, it would be significant not only for its size but also for its symbolism. An Indian infrastructure group taking control of a major British ports business would be seen by many as part of a broader reversal of old colonial-era economic patterns, echoing the way other Indian conglomerates have previously expanded into historic UK assets.
For Adani Ports, such a move would also represent a major international step. A controlling stake in ABP could expand its presence beyond India in a highly visible way and strengthen its position in global port and logistics networks, if negotiations advance and terms are agreed.
At this stage, the company is described as evaluating the opportunity rather than confirming a completed transaction. Even so, the reported interest has already drawn attention because of the scale of the possible buyout, the strategic value of Associated British Ports, and the wider historical meaning attached to an Indian company seeking a landmark UK asset.
