American Airlines lifted a nationwide ground stop Tuesday night after an IT outage briefly disrupted its flight operation. The airline said a technology problem affected connectivity for some of its systems, leading to a temporary halt that impacted travelers across the country.

According to the Air Traffic Control System Command Center, the issue was affecting all airports and facilities during the disruption. A ground stop means departing flights are held on the ground rather than taking off, which can quickly ripple through an airline’s schedule.

The interruption appears to have been temporary, with American Airlines later confirming that the national ground stop had been lifted. Even after a stop is removed, passengers can still face delays as aircraft, crews and airport operations work back into place.

The outage put a spotlight on how dependent major carriers are on internal technology systems for flight planning, communications and airport coordination. For travelers, the main immediate concern was whether flights would resume normally after the airline restored connectivity.
