According to the report, scientists found that a 19-protein blood panel may help forecast whether a person carrying an ALS-related gene variant in the study group is likely to develop the condition.
The finding is notable because the test was reported to predict onset as much as five years in advance. That points to the possibility that ALS-related changes may be detectable well before the symptoms that usually lead to diagnosis. For a disease that is often identified only after nerve damage has already progressed, earlier warning could become an important goal for future research.
The study also highlights muscle-related proteins in the blood, suggesting that early biological changes may begin sooner than many people expect. Rather than showing up only after obvious symptoms appear, these protein patterns could reflect processes linked to ALS in an earlier phase.
While the results are promising, the report describes a study-based finding rather than a ready-to-use screening tool.
