Common antidepressants may be linked to measurable changes in the gut microbiota of people with major depressive disorder, according to reported findings highlighted by Medscape. The research points to a connection between medication use and the balance of bacteria in the digestive system.
The reported association involved selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs. In patients with major depressive disorder, treatment with these widely used drugs was associated with a lower abundance of Clostridium sensu stricto 1, a specific type of gut bacterium.
The findings add to growing interest in the gut-brain axis, the idea that the digestive system and mental health may influence one another. While the report suggests antidepressant use is linked to altered gut microbiota, an association like this does not by itself show that the medications directly caused the bacterial changes.
Even so, the study may help researchers better understand how antidepressant treatment relates to biological systems beyond the brain. It also underscores the increasing focus on the microbiome in depression research, especially as scientists explore why patients may respond differently to treatment.
