Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd. is looking to steadily expand Galeries Lafayette in India as demand for luxury shopping grows. The company is planning the Parisian department store chain’s rollout at a measured pace, with a target of opening one new location about every two years.
The strategy follows the launch of Galeries Lafayette in Mumbai, which the company says has provided an encouraging start. With that model now being tested in the Indian market, ABFRL is preparing a second outlet in Delhi as it evaluates how the format can be adapted for more cities.
The expansion plan reflects broader confidence in India’s domestic luxury segment, which has been gaining momentum. Retailers are increasingly focusing on affluent local consumers rather than relying only on tourist spending, and premium international brands are treating India as a market with long-term potential.
For ABFRL, the approach appears to be cautious but deliberate: establish the concept in major metro markets, study customer response, and then scale gradually. If the Mumbai and Delhi stores perform well, Galeries Lafayette could become a bigger part of India’s evolving luxury retail landscape.
