IndiGo is laying out a broader international strategy that would use India as the base for its next phase of growth. The airline’s leadership says the goal is to evolve into a global carrier by taking Indian travellers from cities in India through one or more hubs and onward to destinations around the world.

The plan signals a shift from being mainly a strong domestic airline with growing overseas services to becoming a bigger player in international connecting traffic. In this approach, India is positioned as the airline’s core market and operational stronghold for expansion abroad.

Bhatia said this is the next stage in IndiGo’s evolution, with the carrier looking to serve Indians travelling internationally through hub-based operations. He also indicated that this traffic has historically been captured by foreign airlines, including carriers from Europe and Southeast Asia.

If executed successfully, the strategy could help IndiGo keep more India-origin international passengers within its own network instead of losing them to overseas competitors. It also underlines how the airline sees rising outbound travel from India as a major long-term growth opportunity.
