Formal retail credit penetration in India has more than doubled over the past decade, pointing to a major expansion in access to borrowing through the formal financial system. The shift highlights how more consumers are turning to regulated lenders for everyday financial needs.

A key driver of this growth has been consumption-led lending, especially personal loans. That trend suggests retail borrowing has increasingly been used to support spending and household requirements, helping fuel the broader rise in credit access.

The expansion was not limited to traditional borrower groups. Credit availability widened among younger customers and women, indicating that lenders have reached segments that were previously less represented in formal retail borrowing.

The report also points to stronger momentum in northern and central parts of India, showing that the spread of formal retail credit has become more geographically broad. Taken together, the trend reflects a deeper and wider retail lending market than India had a decade ago.
