India has launched its first sovereign-backed Protection and Indemnity insurance product under the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool, marking a new step in the country’s maritime insurance framework. The product was introduced by the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance.

The new cover is aimed at improving how maritime liability risks are managed in India. By creating a sovereign-backed option within the domestic market, the move is designed to give the sector a stronger local insurance base for protection and indemnity needs.

Officials have positioned the launch as part of a broader effort to expand domestic underwriting capacity. That matters because India’s maritime sector has long depended heavily on foreign insurers for specialized liability coverage, especially in areas tied to shipping-related risk.

With the BMIP-backed product now in place, India is seeking to reduce that overseas dependence while supporting a more self-reliant maritime insurance ecosystem. The development also signals a policy push to deepen local financial capacity in a strategic sector linked to trade, shipping and marine risk management.
