A laboratory study on chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions is drawing attention after researchers reported evidence of interspecies spread in macaques. The work followed seven macaques and control animals for as long as 7.5 years after inoculation, a lengthy observation period that has fueled discussion about whether the findings have any relevance to human health.
