India’s income-tax department said more than 5.9 crore income-tax returns were filed for assessment year 2026-27 by 31 July 2026. The update highlights the scale of tax return filing for financial year 2025-26 as the main end-July deadline passed.
According to the department, the figure was shared in an update posted on X. The announcement indicates that a large number of taxpayers completed their filings by 31 July, making it one of the key milestones in this year’s return filing cycle.
The latest guidance also points to separate deadlines for some taxpayers using different forms. Those who need to file ITR-3 have time until 31 August, while taxpayers filing ITR-4, also known as Sugam, have until 31 October.
The figures and deadlines are important for taxpayers still preparing their returns for AY 2026-27. While over 5.9 crore returns had already been submitted by the end of July, individuals covered under ITR-3 and ITR-4 should keep their respective due dates in mind.
