Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh, marking the launch of a major new aviation project in the state. The airport is a greenfield facility, meaning it has been built as a new development rather than as an expansion of an existing airport.
According to the project details shared at the event, the airport has been designed to serve 6 million passengers each year in its initial phase. Its long-term plan allows for a major scale-up, with capacity that can eventually reach 40 million passengers annually as demand grows.
Speaking after the inauguration, Modi said India’s civil aviation sector has expanded sharply over the past 12 years. He linked that growth to a rising number of airports and broader access to flying, saying the expansion of air connectivity has helped make air travel available to poorer sections of society.
The opening of the Bhogapuram airport adds to the broader push to build transport infrastructure and strengthen regional connectivity. With its large planned capacity, the new airport is expected to become an important part of Andhra Pradesh’s aviation network as passenger traffic increases in the years ahead.
