A simplified cardiovascular risk score built from age, sex, and ethnicity appears to predict whether coronary artery calcium will be present on coronary CT angiography, according to reported findings. The score, described as the non-zero-calcification-risk MESA or nzcr-MESA score, also showed a moderate relationship with how extensive the calcium burden was.

The reported analysis further linked the simplified score with the severity of coronary artery narrowing seen on CCTA. That means a tool using only a few basic patient characteristics may offer a quick way to estimate the likelihood of calcification as well as more significant coronary disease before imaging is performed.

In practice, the main value could be in helping clinicians choose the most appropriate cardiac CT protocol. If the score identifies patients who are more likely to have coronary calcium or more severe stenosis, imaging teams may be able to better match scanning strategies to the expected findings.

The results highlight the appeal of a streamlined pre-scan assessment in cardiac imaging. Rather than relying on broader calculators or more complex inputs, this approach focuses on a small set of readily available factors while still tracking with coronary calcium and stenosis severity on CT.
