A 14-year-old girl from London has described her shock after doctors found an ovarian tumour weighing more than 5kg. The mass, compared to the size of a pumpkin, was discovered after her stomach became swollen and she suffered severe abdominal pain.

According to the report, she first thought the changes were linked to weight gain rather than a serious health problem. That misunderstanding delayed the realization that the swelling and pain were connected to ovarian cancer.

Her case highlights how symptoms such as abdominal swelling, persistent pain and noticeable changes in the stomach area can sometimes be mistaken for less urgent issues, especially in teenagers. The discovery of such a large tumour underlines how important it can be to investigate ongoing or worsening symptoms.

The teenager has since shared that she is now in remission. Her experience draws attention to ovarian cancer symptoms in young people and the impact of getting the correct diagnosis after early warning signs are overlooked.
