India’s city gas distribution network has expanded rapidly, with more than 12 lakh new PNG household connections added in just three months under DPNG Drive 2.0. The update points to growing momentum for piped natural gas adoption as the country continues to widen access to cleaner fuel infrastructure.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, or PNGRB, has indicated that eastern India is set to become the next major growth hub for CGD, or city gas distribution. That signals a geographic shift in expansion, with the region expected to play a bigger role in the next phase of household and urban gas network development.
The addition of such a large number of PNG connections in a short span highlights the pace at which gas distribution is being scaled up. Wider household access to piped natural gas is also seen as an important step in supporting a broader gas-based economy, a long-term policy objective tied to cleaner energy use and improved fuel delivery systems.
The latest push suggests that regulators and distributors are focusing not only on increasing coverage but also on accelerating last-mile connectivity. With eastern India now identified as a key opportunity area, the CGD sector appears poised for another phase of expansion.
