Taxpayers can now see details of foreign assets and overseas income in the Annual Information Statement, or AIS, on the income tax e-filing portal. The update currently covers data for 2022, 2023 and 2024, giving individuals a clearer view of what the tax system has captured about their offshore holdings and income. Data for 2025 is expected to be added later, likely by late 2026.
The move is significant because foreign asset reporting has been a sensitive compliance area in income tax returns. With this information now visible in AIS, taxpayers can compare the portal data with what they disclosed in earlier ITRs. Any mismatch, omission or incomplete reporting can now be identified more easily instead of relying only on personal records.
If someone missed disclosing foreign assets or income in previous returns, the first step is to review the AIS carefully and match the entries with bank statements, investment records and earlier tax filings. After confirming the gap, the taxpayer should assess which assessment years are affected and whether a correction, updated filing or other remedial step is available under the applicable tax rules. Acting early can help reduce the risk of bigger compliance problems later.
The AIS update is aimed at making tax reporting more transparent and easier to verify. For taxpayers with foreign accounts, investments or income streams, the information now available for 2022-24 can serve as an important compliance check before future filings and while reviewing past returns.
