Researchers at Nagoya University in Japan have identified a group of brain cells that may help explain how motivation is maintained when achieving a reward requires increasing effort. The cells, known as orexin neurons, appear to play a role in continuing goal-directed behavior under more demanding conditions.

In experiments involving rats, blocking the activity of these neurons reduced the animals’ willingness to keep working as the reward became harder to obtain. The findings suggest that orexin neurons are involved not only in reward-seeking, but also in adjusting persistence when the effort required changes.

The study offers a possible biological explanation for why motivation can endure despite growing challenges. It may also provide a starting point for further research into the brain mechanisms involved when motivation weakens, although the reported results come from animal experiments.
