Pengrove Farms in Hudson, Que., became the target of a fraud that cost the farm about $20,000. Matt Penney and his partner were approached by people who claimed to represent a catering company seeking wholesale meat for events.
The loss came roughly three years after Penney’s goal of owning a farm near where he grew up became a reality. Instead of helping the couple expand their business, the scam disrupted their plans and left them facing the financial consequences.
The case has also drawn attention to the limits of protection available to Quebec businesses when they are deceived in commercial transactions. The aftermath of the Pengrove Farms fraud raises questions about how small farms and other businesses can recover when a supposed customer turns out to be part of a scam.
