Markel Bell is using Lane Johnson’s absence from Philadelphia Eagles training camp as an important chance to develop. The rookie offensive tackle is receiving valuable experience while one of the NFL’s most accomplished players at the position is away.
Bell is not being compared directly with Johnson, whose decade-long career has established him as a future Hall of Famer. Still, Johnson’s absence creates additional opportunities for Bell to work, learn and adjust to the demands of the Eagles’ offensive line.
The experience could be significant for Bell as he continues adapting to the professional game. Training alongside an established Eagles group while taking on more responsibility gives the rookie a meaningful setting in which to build confidence and sharpen his skills.
Johnson remains the clear standard Bell is trying to learn from rather than replace. For now, the rookie’s increased exposure in camp is helping him gain experience during an important stage of his development.
