Vanderbilt football opened preseason practice Aug. 5, giving the defense its first opportunity to work together in the buildup to the season. The session offered an early glimpse of the unit, though it was not yet a complete evaluation.
Because players were not in full pads, the practice had clear limitations. Contact, tackling and physical play could not be assessed in the same way they would be during more advanced preseason sessions.
The first workout nevertheless provided an initial look at how Vanderbilt’s defense is beginning its preparation. More meaningful conclusions should come as the Commodores progress through camp and work in full pads.
