The Indian government has mandated exporter registration for foreign-invested ecommerce companies that hold inventory intended for export. These businesses must register as the exporter-on-record, or EOR, before procuring and stocking goods for outbound shipments.
Under the requirement, inventory can be purchased and stored only against confirmed export orders. The policy does not permit foreign-invested ecommerce firms to build speculative stocks in anticipation of future international demand.
The measure, reported from New Delhi, links inventory handling by FDI-backed ecommerce companies to documented export orders and places formal exporter responsibility on the firms involved. It changes how such businesses must organize procurement and stock intended for overseas sales.
