Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk says recent youth-led protests have seriously weakened Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to the BBC, Wangchuk described the effect on Modi as “terribly” damaging, according to the report.
The protests, associated with the Cockroach movement, represented one of the largest public expressions of dissent against Modi in years. Their youth-led character brought renewed attention to opposition to the Indian government.
Wangchuk’s hunger strike helped galvanise the movement and made him one of its leading voices. His assessment places the demonstrations among the most significant recent challenges to Modi’s political standing.
