OpenAI says it disrupted a Cambodia-based scam operation linked to Poipet that used ChatGPT across several types of fraud. The schemes reportedly included investment scams, romance fraud, gambling-related deception and attempts to impersonate law enforcement officials.
The company said it took enforcement action against the network, including banning accounts connected to the activity. OpenAI’s disclosure highlights how generative AI tools can be misused to support multiple scam formats operated by the same group.
The alleged operation covered both financial and social-engineering tactics, targeting people through promises of investment returns, romantic relationships or gambling opportunities. Impersonation of law enforcement added another method for creating pressure and credibility.
OpenAI’s action forms part of efforts to identify and remove coordinated abuse involving ChatGPT, while the Poipet case underscores the broad range of fraudulent schemes that can be linked to one Cambodia-based network.
