New research suggests that hypoglossal nerve stimulation, a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, may provide health benefits that extend beyond improving nighttime breathing. The findings point to broader effects from addressing a condition that is both common and often underdiagnosed.

Researchers estimate that more than 80 million adults in the United States are living with obstructive sleep apnea. The disorder happens when soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses during sleep and blocks the airway, leading to shallow, interrupted or irregular breathing through the night.

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation is designed to help keep the airway open by activating the nerve involved in tongue movement.
