A new study suggests a blood test could significantly improve the early detection of pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease. Researchers reported that the test identified 90 percent of the earliest-stage pancreatic cancers, a result that greatly outperformed the standard tumor marker now used in clinical settings.

Instead of relying on the conventional marker alone, the new approach looks at gene activity in immune cells found in blood. That strategy may help reveal biological changes linked to pancreatic cancer earlier, when treatment options are more likely to be effective.

The findings are notable because pancreatic cancer is often discovered only after it has advanced, contributing to its poor survival rate. Better screening tools for early-stage disease have long been a major goal, and the study points to a possible new way to catch cases sooner.

While the results appear promising, the report describes an emerging test rather than an established replacement for current practice. Even so, the study highlights how blood-based diagnostics could reshape the search for pancreatic cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages.
