A woman’s unusual bad breath turned out to be far more serious than a dental problem. After her boyfriend pointed out the smell, Alice Dogruyol reportedly began brushing her teeth constantly, drinking more water and carrying breath fresheners, but the odour did not go away.

The smell was later described as similar to nail polish remover, a detail that can be linked to ketones building up in the body. That kind of breath change is widely associated with a dangerous diabetes-related crisis and can be a warning that urgent medical treatment is needed.

According to the report, doctors told her she was only about a week away from slipping into a coma. The case underlines how symptoms that seem minor or embarrassing at first can point to a much more severe underlying illness.

While bad breath is often blamed on food, dehydration or oral hygiene, a fruity or chemical smell can signal a metabolic problem instead. The story highlights the importance of getting persistent, unexplained symptoms checked, especially when they do not improve with basic self-care.
